Optical Rails. View-based Point-To-Point Navigation using Spherical Harmonics

چکیده
We present a view-based method for steering a robot in a network of positions; this includes navigation along a prerecorded path, but also allows for arbitrary movement of the robot between adjacent positions in the network. The approach uses an upward-looking omnidirectional camera; even a very modest quality of the optical system is sufficient, since all views are represented in terms of low-order basis functions (spherical harmonics). Motor control signals for the robot are derived from a differential matching approach; the computation of the involved gradient information is extremely simplified by exploiting the fact that all images are represented in terms of basis functions. The viability of the approach for steering the robot has been shown in extensive simulations using photorealistic views; the validity of these simulations in comparison to a tangible system implementation operating in a real indoor scene has been shown in previous investigations [5].

Optical Rails is a purely view-based method for steering a robot through a network of positions in a known environment. Navigation is based on images aquired by an upward-looking omnidirectional camera; even a very modest quality of the optical system is sufficient, since all views are represented in terms of low-order basis functions (spherical harmonics). The theoretical concept of Optical Ra...
متن کاملA Modified Proportional Navigation Guidance for Range Estimation
In this paper, after defining pure proportional navigation guidance in the 3-dimensional state from a new point of view, range estimation for passive homing missiles isexplained. Modeling has been performed by using line of sight coordinates with a particulardefinition. To obtain convergent estimates of those state variables involved particularly inrange channel and unavailable from IR trackers...
متن کاملA Modified Proportional Navigation Guidance for Accurate Target Hitting
When a detector sensitive to the target plume IR seeker is used for tracking airborne targets, the seeker tends to follow the target hot point which is a point farther away from the target exhaust and its fuselage. In order to increase the missile effectiveness, it is necessary to modify the guidance law by adding a lead bias command. The resulting guidance is known as target adaptive guidance ...
متن کاملFast Arbitrary BRDF Shading for Low-Frequency Lighting Using Spherical Harmonics
Real-time shading using general (e.g., anisotropic) BRDFs has so far been limited to a few point or directional light sources. We extend such shading to smooth, area lighting using a low-order spherical harmonic basis for the lighting environment. We represent the 4D product function of BRDF times the cosine factor (dot product of the incident lighting and surface normal vectors) as a 2D table ...
متن کاملSlicing the View: Occlusion-Aware View-Based Robot Navigation
Optical Rails [1] is a purely view-based method for autonomous track following with a mobile robot, based upon compact omnidirectional view descriptors using basis functions on the sphere. We address the most prominent points of criticism towards holistic methods for robot navigation: Dealing with occlusions and varying illumination. This is accomplished by slicing the omnidirectional view into...
